Mme Elena Radu born Pletos
1919 - 2020
It is with heavy hearts that we, the family of the lovely Elena Radu, matriarch of The Radu Family, inform you of her passing on the night of December 18th, 2020. Elena was born on December 7th, 1919, in Montreal, Canada, the daughter of George & Annie Pletosu, parents who sought to make a better life by immigrating to Canada from Romania shortly before
she was born.
For those of us that knew her best, her friends and family, Elena had a zest for life. At 100 years old, she took a trip with her family to the casino, went out regularly to dine, and was an active mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who knew all the goings on of her family. She was an amazing chef, always making sure we ate healthy portions of her East European Cuisine and was quick to offer dessert before the end of dinner! Elena was a fixture at the St. John The Baptist Romanian Church in Montreal, where she routinely volunteered her time in the kitchen, offering to clothe and feed refugees that the church assisted. Elena lived to help her family, notably sharing most of her $10,000 winnings from a Casino trip with her son and grandchildren.
Elena was the wife of sweetheart George Radu for over 60 years. She was a sister to Elizaveta, Aurora, Stanley and Nicolai. She shared a close bond with sister-in-law Eleanor, and loved dearly her long-time cat Barney. She takes her rightful place in heaven with those loved ones she has longed to see again.
She leaves behind her loving son Allen (Linda), her grandchildren Marke (Shania) & Nadia (Mihai), three lovely great-granddaughters Sofia, Sasha and Steffi, and a loving extended family in Canada and the U.S. As hard as it is for us to say goodbye to someone that has been so dear to our hearts for so long, we feel blessed to have had her in our lives and will keep her with us always.
Due to the current public health crisis, a traditional funeral service will not be taking place at this time. In the spring, a special memorial service will be held in Elena’s honour at Mount Royal Cemetery, where she will join her husband and parents. This will be open to all friends & family wishing to pay their respects and celebrate the life of this incredible woman.
