It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bohdan Maciw on October 1, 2018 at the Lakeshore General Hospital at the age of 93.

Leaving to mourn and lovingly remember him are his beloved wife Olena (nee Derkatsch) of 64 years, his three children Christina, Adrian and Mark (Milena), “Dido” to his five grandchildren, Isabella (Pierre Luc), Nicholas, Brenna, Alannagh and Michaela, his step granddaughters Olivia and Anais, and his precious great grandson Evan. He was predeceased by his sister Stephania, but leaves behind his nieces and nephews, Christina (Roman), Marta (Alex), Michael (Lydia), Bohdan (Victoria) and their children and grandchildren. He is survived by his brother Roman in Belarusia. He leaves behind family in Canada, US, Ukraine and Germany.

Bohdan was born on August 12, 1925 in Lviv, Ukraine where he spent his early years. In 1943 he volunteered for the Ukrainian “Divisia Halychyna”, completed officer training in Czechoslovakia and continued to fight against the Soviet Army. At the end of the war, he was interned in a British POW camp in Rimini, Italy and later the UK. After his release in December of 1948 he continued to take part in Ukraine liberation movements.

After completing his engineering studies in London, Bohdan immigrated with his wife Olena to Canada in November 1956, where he worked at Union Carbide until his retirement.

Bohdan immersed himself in the Ukrainian community in Montreal, became a member of Plast Pryat, as his wife and children were members of “Plast” Ukrainian Scouting Organization. In 1984, when the disinformation campaign was launched by the Simon Wiesenthal Center against the former members of the Ukrainian Division Halychyna, he cofounded the chapter of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress “Anti –Defamation League” and participated in the Deschene Commission hearings in Ottawa. At that time he was also elected as the Head of Brotherhood of the Montreal Chapter of the Veterans of Divisia Halychyna, a post he held until its liquidation in December 2012.

For decades, Bohdan worked on the collection of photographs documenting the history of the Divisia Halychyna, compiling 4 volume albums (over 1000 photos). These albums were donated to the Canadian Archives in Ottawa, the National Library of Congress in Washington, the Central Photo Archives in Kyiv and the Archives of his native Lviv. Also, his book/ photo album “The Ukrainian Division Halychyna” was published in 2009 in Ukraine in Ukrainian and English and donated to libraries and schools in Ukraine and the Diaspora.

In 1990, Bohdan headed the Children of Chernobyl Montreal Chapter; where for decades he organized the collection of funds for medical equipment for children’s hospitals in Ukraine.

Bohdan, beloved husband of Olena, “Tato” to his children and “Dido” to his grandchildren and great grandson, will be tremendously missed for his love, generousity, caring, humour, kindness, and devotion to his family and friends.

Much appreciation and thanks goes to the wonderful doctors, nurses, therapists and staff at the Emergency and Intensive Care Units of the Lakeshore General Hospital. Everyone was very caring, considerate and compassionate in the final days of Bohdan’s life.

Visitation will be on Thursday October 4 from 6 pm until 9 pm (Panakhyda at 7:30 pm) at Alfred Dallaire Memoria Funeral home at 3254 rue Bellechasse, Montreal. The funeral will take place at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church at 6175 - 10th Avenue, Montreal at 10 a.m. on Friday October 5, followed by a procession and burial at Notre Dame des Neiges Cemetery.
