Mr. Dmytro (Dominique) Jurtschyschyn


1935 - 2020

On March 2nd, died Dmytro Jurtschyschyn, in Montreal. He turned 84 on December 5th. Son of Wasyl Jurtschyschyn and Kateryn Dubrowna. Married for 61 years with Sylvette Durand who passed away in July 2019.

He leaves his son Pierre (Jury) Jurtschyschyn and his wife Jocelyne Deschênes, and his grandchildren Charles-Olivier (Sophie Duhaime, their children Cédric, Léa et Maélie), Anne Laure et Èvelyne. He also leaves his sister, Irène (feu Yves Fortier) and her children Michel and Anita.

Born in Ukraine, he arrived in Canada on January 1st 1955. He left his village of Spas, oblast (province) of Ivano-Frankivsk, in Ukraine, not long after the start of the Second World War. With his parents he first sent to Germany, near Halberstadt, and moved a few years later by Hanover in a Displaced Persons Camp. After two years there, they had to leave, chosing to rejoin Kateryn’s family close to Bordeaux, France. From there he emigrated to Canada, arriving January 1st, 1955, in Halifax. He was travelling with his mother and sister, to meet with his father who had arrived a couple of years before.

His first years in Canada he spent working at odd jobs (taxi driver, pressman) before finding his calling in sales. In the meantime he had met Sylvette Durand during a double date, a common practice at the time.

He sold paint at Circle Paint & Wallpaper on Queen-Mary Road, then sold flowers, wallpaper and eyeglass frames before completing his high-school equivalency in order to become a real estate agent. After starting with Century 21, he jumped to Royal-Lepage before finishing his career with Immeubles Kava.

Polyglot who spoke at least six languages, he spent his last decades on a postage stamp collection, and travelling in Europe and the Americas, but never setting foot in Ukraine.

He leaves his in-laws Yolande (Gilles Tanguay), Marie-Marthe (Fernando Charron), Nicole (André Houle), Jacques-André (Pierrette Rondeau) and Alain (Manon Laferrière), their children and grandchildren. His family in France : Michèle Moreau, her husband Christian Binoche and their son Jean-Alexandre. His family in England : his cousin Michael, his daughter Zoryana and her mother.

Finally, he leaves his freemason brothers of Waverley Lodge and many dear friends.
A commemorative service will be held at a later date.
