It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ludmila (Knava) Kocherha, who passed away peacefully in Montréal on Friday, July 7, 2023, at the age of 87.
Beloved wife of the late Iwan Kocherha and dearest mother and mother-in-law to Walter (Naomi) and Victor. Cherished Babtsia to Matthew (Olivia). Loving sister and sister in-law to Halyna (Peter), and dear aunt to Alexis (Jeff), Mark (Katie), and Lorraine (Tim) and great aunt to Irina. She will be sorely missed by her family, as well as by her extended family and friends.
Born in Ukraine, she immigrated to Canada from Liège, Belgium with her family in October 1951. They travelled by train to Bremen, Germany and boarded a Norwegian registered ship called the SS Goya. After a 2-week voyage, they spotted the shores of Canada for the first time, with its forests in resplendent fall colours. After docking in Halifax, they boarded a train to Montreal. Once in Montreal, they were warmly welcomed by the Ukrainian community. They became members of St. Sophie church, originally located on De Lorimier street. Father Sluzar and his family helped to get them settled in their new home called Canada.
Luda was an active member within the Ukrainian community her entire life and belonged to various church organizations. She also worked as a Ukrainian teacher and at Ukrainian Mutual Aid of Montreal for many years.
Sincere thanks are extended to the staff at the CHSLD Polonais Marie-Curie-Sklodowska for their wonderful care and attention, as well as to the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital.
