Stella Lawand, 92, passed away on November 15, 2021 at Mount Sinai Hospital, Montreal.

One of-a-kind, Stella left a memorable impression on everyone she met, with her legendary sense of humour, tenacity and colorful fashion sense.

Blessed with a glorious voice, she could have been a Hollywood starlet, but chose a life dedicated to the care of others. She trained as a nurse at the Royal Victoria hospital in Montreal, where she worked for 35 years until her retirement. She earned a BA at night school from the Sir Thomas More Institute.

While she would never have called herself a feminist, she blazed her own trail at a time when women’s options were limited.

Her true love was for animals, in particular the many cats that crossed her path and whom she welcomed into her home. The strays stayed and became an integral part of the family.

Stella became the matriarch of the Lawand family when her beloved mother, Eloise, died in 1995.  Family members and friends gathered round her dining room table for abundant feasts and animated debates.  In her final days, she was surrounded by multiple generations of loving family members, friends and caregivers.

She is survived by her sisters, Vivian and Nancy, brother Tom; sister-in-law Claudette; and nieces Christina (Jeff Denesyk), Kathleen, Simone, Vanessa (Ramachandra Borcar) and great-niece, Juliette. She is preceded by her brother William and parents Ameen and Eloise.

Thank you, Stella. May you Rest in Peace.
