Mario George Carreiro, aged 63, passed on surrounded by his closest ones in his home, Monday September 18th 2023.

Born in Montreal on July 5th 1960 to parents Jose Carreiro & Mariana Ferreira who emigrated from Porto Formoso on the island of São Miguel in the Açores. He grew up on Rue De Bullion in the Plateau, hard working from a young age, and developed a passion for woodworking that would see him building kitchens and bars in many homes of family and friends.

In 1988, after marrying his former wife Grace Amaral and having their first child Kristopher in the year prior, he moved into the home we all know so well on Casgrain, right by the Jean Talon market and Parc Jarry. In the next year, his daughter Jennipher was born and this house would be the place where both children would grow to become the people they are today. He was a grandfather to Ashlyn & Tiago, both born of Jennipher and her husband Jonathan Vargas, who he loved dearly. Kristopher and his fiancé Jeanne Gariépy have the absolute pleasure to continue to grow a business that Mario had a great part in building, it will keep his spirit alive for many years to come. His godchildren, family and friends are left with a great sorrow knowing how much he truly loved them.

Mario was a quintessential member of his community. With the building he lived in and tended to all these years, many people had a wonderful home with a most generous and friendly landlord. He was a great patron of all his favourite spots in the neighbourhood and around the city, and to all out there whose establishments he regularly visited, we share our sympathies. As his children we sorely miss him, but we know how dear he was to so many and we share in your grief.

We will miss having him to organize and host get-togethers, with enough food and drink to fill you up and send you home with extras. The tradition will continue and we look forward to gathering, in celebration of life and his legacy.

As an alternative to flowers, we invite you to make a donation in his name to the Matthew Salsa Foundation. A sincere thank you from his son and daughter, Kris & Jenny.
