Romana (Ramona) Maria Kulish (née Hrycay)
(1941-2023)

It is with great sadness that we announce that Roma Kulish passed away peacefully in Montreal on June 26, 2023 after a brief hospitalization. Beloved wife of the late Rostyslaw (Rusty) Kulish, she is survived by family and friends in Canada, USA, France and Ukraine.

Born on January 1, 1941 in Rohatyn, Ukraine, she and her family eventually settled in Montreal in 1948 after fleeing their homeland during World War II and became active in Montreal’s vibrant Ukrainian community. Following in her ancestors’ footsteps, Roma naturally developed a love of song and music, and sang in several Ukrainian choirs over the years as a soprano and soloist. She deeply loved opera and classical music.

Throughout her career, Roma worked at Bell Canada and was fortunate to retire early at age 50, allowing her to enjoy extended summers with her family at her beloved cottage at Vorokhta in the Eastern Townships. She will be remembered for her beautiful singing voice, her sense of humour, her love of a good game of cards and time spent at the cottage with the family.

Roma is also predeceased by her brother Eugene George and her parents, Wolodymyr and Melania (née Potasznyk). She is survived by her brother Alex and her sister-in-law Romana, nieces Taïssa (Marc) and Natalia (Taras), grandnephew Maksym, grandniece Teya, stepdaughter Tamara (and her daughter Tatianna) and stepson Taras (Sandra; and their daughters Sonya and Laryssa).

Visitation will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 16 at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church at 6175-10th Avenue in Montreal (Rosemont), followed by a funeral service (Panachyda) at 4 p.m. A private family burial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations made in her memory to PLAST Ukrainian Youth Association of Montreal would be appreciated.

Vichnaya Pamyat.
