Gerald M. Konanec D.D.S
December 10, 1941- October 13, 2021

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dr. Gerald M. Konanec. Gerry passed peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family, after an amazing life of 79 years.

Loving husband of Irene (nee Motyka) for 51 years. Adored father of Taras (Natalia), Krystina (Jacob) and Mark (Andrea). Grandfather of Maksym, Teya, Violet and Adam.

Born in Montreal as Slawko Maxim Konanec to Ukrainian immigrants, he was raised on Dezery street with modest means. Gerry attended Cardinal Newman High School and eventually was accepted into Dentistry at McGill University, where he graduated in 1965. This began a relationship with the institution as a teacher and associate professor where he devoted 50 years of mentoring generations of students in the discipline of removable prosthodontics. Gerry loved teaching tremendously and always came home recharged after spending time with his students.

Gerry established his dental practice on Sherbrooke Street and retired from the profession in 2011 after 46 years, 13 of which he practiced with his son, Taras. Gerry loved helping his patients and always put providing care and compassion above all else.

Gerry was proud of his Ukrainian heritage and steadfast in his commitments to helping the community in which he served on the church committee of St. Michael’s Parish and then on the Father Jean Foundation board for 53 years.

Gerry was one of a kind - he had an unparalleled joie de vivre, enjoying nothing more than spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid outdoorsman and a proud member of the B.U.M.S (The Benevolent Union of Master Sportsmen). He loved his time outdoors at Camp Ukraina and with his buddies on hunting and fishing trips.

He strongly believed in hard work and education which was a constant inspiration to his family. He will always be remembered for his light, jovial and sometimes fiery personality and his devout love for his family which was always his greatest source of pride and joy. He always said, “The best thing I ever did in my life was to marry “Irch” and have children.” Even as his health failed, he remained positive until the end. He will always be missed and never forgotten. Gerry, Tato, Dido, we love you to the moon and back.
