John Gary Plaxton, at age 80, passed away in Montreal, on May 25th 2016. Born in Toronto on November 30th 1935 to Jean Murchie and John Plaxton. Survived by his loving wife and best friend Louise Charlebois, son Michel (Joanne Gamble), daughter Elizabeth (Frédéric Szulga) and granddaughter Cathryn. He was the oldest of 4 children: Jim (Stephanie Tjelios), Jill (Michael Johnston) and of the late Robert (Margaret Knowles). He also leaves brothers and sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews, cousins, friends, colleagues and students.
He had a long successful career in television, film and theatre. Actor, director, producer and teacher, Gary began his career in his hometown of Winnipeg. Then on to Ottawa, Toronto and finally in Montreal. He worked at CBC and Radio-Canada and also became one of Canada’s first independent TV producers. He then happily and dynamically passed on his knowledge to a new generation, teaching drama in the Professional Theatre Department at Dawson College in Montreal. He was a lover of the arts: poetry, music, theatre and literature. His many friends and colleagues, as well as family, will remember him as a fierce Scrabble opponent, a walking Encyclopedia enthusiastic to answer any inquiries and a theatrical storyteller always eager to entertain and raise a few smiles.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Gary Plaxton Memorial Award for the graduating Professional Theatre student in good standing who best exemplifies the qualities of dedication, generosity and respect for the profession.
