Mr. Mario Onyszchuk

Professor Mario Onyszchuk July 21, 1930 - January 1, 2021

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Mario Onyszchuk on Friday, January 1, 2021. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years Anastasia (Nancy) Onyszchuk, and by his son Ivan. He is survived by son Tim (Silvia) of St. Lazare, Quebec, and by son Greg (Barbara) and grandsons Ethan and Zachary, all of Kansas City.

Mario was born in 1930 in what was Poland at the time, now part of the Ukraine.  He grew up in Montreal, earned one PhD in Chemistry from McGill University and another from Cambridge University in England.  Mario took a position at McGill University teaching, conducting research and ultimately serving as Chairman of the Chemistry Department for two terms.  He was appointed Professor Emeritus by McGill upon his retirement.

Mario was devoted to his family. He set many examples of hard work, kindness and generosity. He found many opportunities to provide advice, help and support to family members and friends.

Mario loved playing poker with his friends from McGill, and later passed on his playing knowledge to his grandsons along with showing them how to play chess.  He was also a formidable Scrabble player.
