Mr. Roman Korol
1939 - 2024
Passed away peacefully, in Montreal in his 84th year. Roman was predeceased by his parents Ivan and Stephania (Harun) Korol. Roman was a loving husband to Michelle Ste-Marie; they remained best friends long after parting ways. He leaves behind his sister, Orysia Korol; his children Nadia Korol Robichaud (Jules) Natalie Korol Simmons (Matthew); five grandchildren Nina Charlem (Benjamin), Nicolas Robichaud (Delanie), Elisabeth Robichaud, Benjamin Korol-Petersen, Nicholas Korol-Petersen.
Born in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine, on April 15, 1939, Roman fled communism with his family, arriving in Montreal in 1949 with few possessions. After serving in the Canadian military, Roman graduated from McGill University in 1962 as an electrical engineer. He went on to work at SNC Lavalin and served in the federal government with the Department of Indigenous and Northern Affairs (then Indian Affairs) in both the North and the Maritimes.
In retirement, Roman became an avid fitness buff, and was often seen on his bicycle, or in the swimming pool at the YMCA on Parc Ave. In later years, he was able to fulfill his lifelong dream of returning to Ukraine, only to see war return more recently. Roman was fiercely proud of his Ukrainian heritage and made many connections online in support for Ukraine.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has already taken place. In lieu of a funeral, there will be a small, private gathering later in the spring to celebrate his life.
